Coffee Sangria

With Spring finally here, I thought I would share a recipe for a delicious new coffee drink I tried last week.

I stopped by a new café in Union Square called Bourbon Coffee.

Bourbon is Africa’s first retail coffee brand. They import all of their coffee from Rwanda, and the café’s name comes from the Bourbon Arabica beans grown there.  All of the furnishings and artwork at the café are handmade in Africa, and everything is fair trade.  The atmosphere was a refreshing change of pace.  I thought I might have embarked on an African safari or that I stumbled into Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

The menu had a bunch of items that I was not familiar with (always fun!) and since it was unseasonably warm last week  (70 degrees!), I wanted an iced drink. I noticed Coffee Sangria on the menu and decided to give it a try (hoping that it might contain another favorite cold drink of mine, white wine. Sadly, it didn’t.).

By far, it’s the best iced coffee drink I’ve ever had.  The flavors of orange and lime enhanced the drink, and it was sweet without being too sweet.  I liked the strength of the coffee, and it was extremely refreshing, perfect for a warm spring or summer day.

Coffee Sangria

  • 8 ounces cold brewed coffee
  • 3 orange slices
  • 1/2 a lime sliced into thin wedges
  • Sweetener, if desired
  • Ice

Add orange and lime wedges to coffee and add your favorite sweetener (sugar, agave, etc. – I used a little orange juice) before adding ice. Makes 1 serving.

Just like any sangria, I recommend letting it chill in the fridge for at least an hour – it’s worth the wait.  Happy Spring!
